Top Ten Pharmaceutical Companies Form Non-Profit to Help Accelerate Drug Development

Big news has hit the pharmaceutical world once again.  The top ten pharmaceutical companies have formed a non-profit organization called TransCelerate BioPharma, Inc, to assist in the acceleration of drug development, implement better quality strategies to enroll patients in clinical trials, and possibly shorten the time it takes for these clinical trials to take place which eventually leads to possible drug approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  In addition to the above mentioned positive changes, the non-profit hopes to increase efficiency and reduce errors as well.  The top-ten big pharma companies involved in the non-profit are:  Abbott, AstraZeneca, Boehringer, Ingelheim, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly and Company,  GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Genentech (a member of the Roche Group), and Sanofi Pharmaceuticals.

Janet Woodcock, MD, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research recently commented on the new formation of the non-profit organization.  “We applaud the companies in TransCelerate BioPharma for joining forces to address a series of longstanding challenges in new drug development.  This collaborative approach in the pre-competitive arena, utilizing the collective experiences and resources of 10 leading drug companies and others to follow, has the promise to lead to new paradigms and cost savings in drug development, all of which would strengthen the industry and its ability to develop innovative and much-needed therapies for patients.”

The formation of this non-profit has the potential to make strides in the pharmaceutical world and give pharmacy technicians new and innovative information and education concerning the development of new drugs and other important areas in the pharmacy field.
