FDA Approves Generic Version of Cymbalta

The FDA has approved a generic version of Lilly’s antidepressant Cymbalta (duloxetine deyayed-release capsules).  Cymbalta is used to treat depression, anxiety, and is now used to treat some forms of pain.  Teva Pharmaceuticals has released information on the various strengths of the antidepressant.  Cymbalta in the generic form will be available from Teva in 20 mg in bottles of 60 capsules, 30 mg in bottles of 30 capsules, and 60 mg in bottles of 30 capsules.  Other pharmaceutical companies will be manufacturing the generic equivalent of the drug as well.

“Healthcare professionals and consumers can be assured that these FDA approved generic drugs have met our rigorous standards,” said Kathleen Uhl, M.D., and acting director of the Office of Generic Drugs in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.  “Generic drugs offer greater access to healthcare for many people,” said Uhl.

The most common side-effects associated with Cymbalta are nausea, dry mouth, drowsiness, fatigue, decreased appetite, increased sweating, and dizziness.  Healthcare providers should monitor patients closely while taking this medication as well as checking their blood pressure on a regular basis.

Cymbalta is a very popular drug on the market right now with it showing no slow down in drug sales.  It remains to be seen if the generic version will prove as popular.  As a pharmacy technician, do you help fill many Cymbalta prescriptions at your pharmacy?
