Work Tips Tuesday: How to Get the Job Even If You are Overqualified

Do you possess many degrees, but want to work in the pharmacy technician field?  You may feel over qualified for the job, but many pharmacy technician students wishing to enter the field have a wide variety of skills and areas of expertise outside of the pharmacy world, but do not let the extra knowledge stop you from getting the job you desire.  Here are a few tips to increase your chances:

  • Show your credentials.  If you have taken the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) and have also completed an accredited pharmacy technician program, be sure to show those credentials on your resume and mention them in your cover letter at the right time.

  • Discuss.  If you have experience in other fields, but found new interest in a pharmacy technician career, discuss your strong interest in the field during an interview.  This will give you an opportunity to explain why you are looking to enter a different area other than the one you worked in previously.

  • Salary.  Try not to put salary at the top of your concerns.  Since you are entering a different type of work and the salary may differ from your previous one - be flexible and open concerning the issue of money.  Job candidates often take a job that pays less simply because they want to work in a different sector and that is ok!

Do not feel like you have to shy away from a job because you feel overqualified for it.  The above tips can help you snag the perfect pharmacy technician job if you play your cards right!
