CVS Will Stop Selling Tobacco Products by October 1st

In an effort to help individuals get and stay healthy, CVS/Caremark says they will stop selling tobacco products and cigarettes in their stores by October 1st, 2014.

Larry J. Merlo, President and CEO of CVS/Caremark said the following in a recent article for CNN about CVS’s new news.  “Ending the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products at CVS/Caremark pharmacy is the right thing for us to do for our customers and our company to help people on their path to better health.  Put simply, the sale of tobacco products is inconsistent with our purpose.”

The large drug chain operates 7,600 drug stores nationwide and runs approximately over 800 Minute Clinics to date.   In addition, CVS will lose roughly $2 billion in revenue from tobacco sales.  Many independent pharmacies have dropped cigarettes and other tobacco products according to John Norton of the National Community Pharmacists Association.

Do you think other big drug chains will follow CVS’s lead?  As a pharmacy technician and pharmacy professional, what do you think of the ban?
