Work Tips: Receiving and Giving Feedback

Whether you are a pharmacy technician who gets feedback from your pharmacy manager or a technician that supervises other technicians, feedback given or received will most certainly come into the workplace picture.  The question is how to take in feedback you are being told or the question may be how to properly give workplace feedback without ending up with angry or unhappy employees.  Shelia Heen, co-author of the new book “Feedback:  The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well (Even When it is Off Base, Unfair, Poorly Delivered, and Frankly You are Not in the Mood)” has some expert tips on how to take feedback seriously, but in stride.  Here is a look at some of her tips:

  • Can I have that supersized?  How many times have you blown something your supervisor said out of proportion?  According to Heen, most of the time your manager is talking about a specific thing you did or need to do to improve on.  It does not mean that they think you are a bad employee.  Don’t take it to heart.

  • Hit the pause button.  We automatically want to think “She doesn’t know what she is talking about, or find some reason to discard threatening feeling information.”  But take a deep breath and try to understand what she is saying,” says Heen.  Try to get specifics before taking what is being said too critical.
