Career Tips: Surviving The Phone Interview

Phone interviews are generally easy for journalists to conduct, but what about people who do not conduct them very often? The idea may make you nervous or it may seem like a breeze, either way here are some tips to help you get through the phone interview.

  • Your view. Treat your phone interview the same way you would an in-person interview. Some people may think the interview is easier to conduct because it is over the phone and that is not true. Just because you may talk to your potential employer over the phone does not mean you should stay in your Pj’s or conduct the interview from your bed. In fact, grooming yourself and dressing the part will help your overall outlook and also increase confidence.

  • Distractions. Try to get rid of as many distractions as possible. Career experts suggest going into another room to conduct your interview. Separate yourself from distractions such as kids, pets, TV, and music. Getting away from these distractions will help you focus on the interview and also keep the noise factor down while you are talking to your potential employer.

  • Take notes. Keep a notebook and pen and paper handy so you can take notes and write down important things the interviewer says during your interview.

  • Resume. Be sure to keep a current copy of your resume by you in case you need to refer to it at any time while you are on the phone.

Phone interviews may make your sweat, but they do not have to. Keep your cool and nine times out of ten you will ace it! To read about more career tips and advice, please go to our Facebook page or visit
