Lunesta Goes Generic

Insomnia and sleep disorders plague thousands of people each night. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), individuals suffering from sleep insufficiency are more likely to be susceptible to hypertension, diabetes, depression, cancer, obesity, increased mortality, reduced quality of life, and loss of productivity.

Pharmacy technicians and insomniacs will be glad to know that Lunesta (eszopiclone) has gone generic. According to Lunesta’s maker, Sunovion Pharmaceuticals, Lunesta is the #1 prescription sleep aid prescribed by doctors.

The generic version of the popular sleep aid will come in 1 mg in 30 count and the 2 mg and 3 mg tablets will come in 100 count. So far, Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, and Teva Pharmaceuticals have announced generic versions of Lunesta. Serious side effects associated with Lunesta are allergic reaction, aggression, agitation, changes in behavior, thoughts of suicide, or hallucinations.  Less serious side-effects associated with Lunesta are day time drowsiness, dizziness, or a ‘hang over’ feeling.  Other less serious side-effects are problems with memory or concentration, anxiety, depression, nervous feeling, headaches, nausea, stomachpain, loss of appetite, constipation, and/or dry mouth.

Pharmacy technicians may pass on this very valuable information to their pharmacist and other pharmacy technicians. To learn more about Lunesta please go to
