May 2014: Remembering Mental Health Month

Remembering to take care of our mental health is just as important as keeping up with our physical health. At times, mental health problems may go unnoticed or undiagnosed, leaving an individual with more problems than they started with. Mental illnesses can be identified and treated with a variety of treatment options, whether the treatment is through therapy, medication, or a combination of both.

Mental Health America is asking individuals to remember that “May is Mental Health Month.” Mental Health America serves to educate and inform individuals about how mental and physical health goes together by reaching millions of people through the media, local events, and screenings. The organization prides itself in representing those who have been diagnosed with a mental illness or those who will face battling one.

“Pathways to Wellness” is the focus of May is Mental Health Month. The importance of mental health is mentioned in press materials by Mental Health America.  Here is what they had to say. “Fully embracing the concept of wellness not only improves health in the mind, body, and spirit, but also maximizes one’s potential to lead a full and productive life. Using strategies that promote resiliency and strengthen mental health and prevent mental health and substance use conditions lead to improved general health and a healthier society, greater academic achievement by our children, a more productive economy, and families that stay together,” according to Mental Health America.
