Remembering The Importance Of American Stroke Month

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association are asking all Americans to remember American Stroke Month in May. According to these two organizations, someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds and 80 percent of strokes are preventable. There are two things Americans should remember to help save a life from suffering a stroke. It is important to know if you are at risk for a stroke and you should be aware of the warning signs and what to do in a stroke emergency.

“Knowing if you are at risk for a stroke is highly important, because many risk factors can be modified and controlled. The number one stroke risk factor is high blood pressure. It is important to check your blood pressure regularly and talk to your doctor about healthy levels for you,” said Jeffrey L. Saver, M.D. and professor of neurology and director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the University of California in Los Angeles.

The American Stroke Association is sponsoring the “Together To End Stroke” initiative. Through the initiative, tools are available to help make individuals aware of stroke signs and how to help prevent, treat, and beat a stroke. Common signs of a stroke include face dropping, arm weakness, and speech difficulty.  Additional signs of a stroke include sudden severe headache without a cause, trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, loss of coordination, eyesight trouble, confusion, and trouble understanding.

Know the signs and symptoms of a stroke can help save your life or someone else’s.  Educate and inform yourself of these signs and symptoms by going to
