June is PTSD Awareness Month

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Center for PTSD want to remind and encourage individuals of the importance of PTSD Awareness Month. The National Center for PTSD is here to help suffers of the condition by helping people learn about treatments, help people connect and reach out to someone with PTSD, and also help spread the word about PTSD awareness.

“There are many barriers that keep people with PTSD from seeking the help they need. Knowledge and awareness, however, are key to overcoming these barriers. For those living with PTSD, knowing there are treatments that work, for example, can lead them to seek needed care. Greater public awareness of PTSD can help reduce the stigma of this mental health problem and overcome negative stereotypes that keep many people from pursing treatment,” said Dr. Matthew Friedman, former Executive Director of the National Center for PTSD.

People can suffer from PTSD for many reasons and as a result of life trauma. Having PTSD can cause many signs and symptoms and treatment should be sought early on at the onset of these signs and symptoms. Common stress reactions to a trauma may be fear, anxiety, depression, guilt, shame, anger, irritability, and behavioral changes. Some symptoms of PTSD are: reliving the event, avoiding situations that remind you of the event, negative changes in beliefs and feelings, and feelings of being keyed up.

Please visit to learn more about PTSD and to read more on the condition, additional symptoms, treatment options, and stories of PTSD survivors.
