FDA Releases Medication Safety Tips For Older Adults

Getting older can be tough for many individuals. Older people may suffer from new health conditions or they may be managing conditions they have already. This may mean taking one or more drugs to manage these conditions. The FDA has released medication safety tips for older adults. Below is a look at some of the beneficial and helpful tips:

Take it right. The FDA is asking patients to take their medication as prescribed and if they have any questions about their medication they should contact their doctor or pharmacist. This is where the pharmacy technician can encourage patients to discuss their drug concerns with the pharmacist.

Medication List. Patients should always have a list of medications they are taking. They should carry it with them and also give a copy of the list to their pharmacist. Also consider giving a copy to a trusted friend or family member in the case of an emergency.

Be Aware of Potential Drug Interactions. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of the different medications you are taking. There are virtually billions of drug interactions that can cause harm to you if you are not aware of the interactions. These interactions can be drug-drug interactions and also drugs that interact with certain foods we eat.

As pharmacy technicians we can help share these helpful tips and make the lives of our patients better. We are, after all, here to assist the pharmacist by making the lives of patients better. Patient safety is #1.
