Conquering Job Interviews With An Anxiety Disorder

You have a job interview for the most perfect pharmacy technician job, but you have an anxiety disorder. Most job interviews produce a certain amount of anxiety for any person, but when you have an anxiety disorder the interview can produce anxiety at a very high level in someone who has a disorder already. Those with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), may feel especially vulnerable in tackling a job interview.  Just the thought of interviewing may want to make you run. Here are some tips to remember the next time you go on your next big pharmacy technician job interview:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Consider discussing your upcoming interview or interviews with a therapist or career counselor.  Be honest and tell them that you suffer from an anxiety disorder and ask them to help coach you before the interview. They can give you tips on how to deal with tough interview questions, how to dress, and also give you extra confidence before the big day.

Medication.  If you have been prescribed medication by your doctor be sure to take it. Appropriate medications are there to help you cope with your interview. If you are not on the right medication or the medication is not helping, then talk to your doctor before you schedule interviews so they can get you on the right track.

Dress Comfortably. Dress comfortably for the interview, but professional. Decide what comfortable means to you, and still looks good to wear on an interview.

Plan Ahead.  Visit the interview site before you have your actual interview. Believe it or not, this takes a lot of stress out of planning for the interview. Also, use GPS, Google Maps, or Map Quest to guide you to your destination.

Having an anxiety disorder is not easy and neither is finding a job, but remember to follow these tips and you should do fine. Break a leg on your next interview!
