Novartis Pharmaceutical Company Will License Google’s Smart Lens Contacts

Recently, the Novartis Pharmaceutical Company announced that Alcon (its eye care division) will license Google’s ‘Smart Lens.’ The smart lens would enable diabetic patients to manage their blood sugar without drawing blood from their finger and enable them to monitor blood sugar through tear samples from the lens. The contacts will wirelessly connect to mobile devices to report the blood sugar levels in real-time.  Those with impaired eyesight can also benefit from the lenses as some of the lenses will provide accommodative vision correction for individuals with eyesight impairments like presbyopia and other vision problems that would require corrective lenses.

Two Google executives recently commented on the Google Smart Lens. “Our dream is to use the latest technology in the miniaturization of electronics to help improve the quality of life for millions of people. We are very excited to work with Novartis to make this dream come true,” said Google co-founder Sergey Brin. Novartis CEO Joseph Jimenez also recently commented on the new wave contacts.  “We are looking forward to working with Google to bring together their advanced technology and our extensive knowledge of biology to meet unmet medical needs. This is a key step for us to go beyond the confines of traditional disease management, starting with the eye,” said Jimenez. Novartis is in hopes to have a prototype available for research-and-development reviews in the early months of 2015.

The Smart Lens will go way beyond what regular contact lenses provide today and will medically provide new intervention and treatment for many eye diseases and treatments.
