Celebrating National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

The American College of Sports Medicine, Food and Drug Administration, and National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month representatives from want to remind parents and kids of this very important awareness month. According to, there are more than 23 million children and teens that are overweight.

Obese children are at a higher rate for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and being obese puts them at risk for strokes as well. The Santa Barbara Family YMCA and FDA have some excellent tips on keeping kids happy and healthy:

  • Unstructured Play. The YMCA suggests giving kids one hour of at least unstructured play a day. They suggest making the playtime outside (when weather permits) and get the kids to break a sweat by getting at least 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity at least three times a week.

  • Cut portions. Who says you have to eat everything on your plate?  FDA Consumer Reports suggest cutting portions. Some portion suggestions for parents would be quarter cups of food, tablespoons, and half sandwiches. These ideas will of course depend on the child’s size, age, and activity level.

  • Read the label. Always advise parents to read the label before purchasing a food for their child.  Check for fats, sugars, carbohydrates, saturated, unsaturated fat, and trans fat.

Leila T. Beker, of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, recently commented on nutrition strategies for children. “You have to have a strategy for a healthy life, week by week.  Think about what fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains your family will eat so you can shop and have wholesome food on hand,” said Beker.  Pharmacy Technicians wishing to learn more about National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month may go to
