Itís Never Too Early To Get Smart About Antibiotics

The Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control, Department of Health and Human Services, and the American Pharmacists Association are asking pharmacy customers and patients to remember to educate themselves about the use and overuse of antibiotics with “Get Smart About Antibiotics Week 2014.” This important week will take place November 17th to the 23rd.

The above organizations believe pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can make a difference in educating patients about using antibiotics safely and properly. Antibiotics are also known as antimicrobial drugs used to help fight infections caused by bacteria. It should be noted that they are not effective in treating viral infections such as the common cold, flu, and most sore throats.  According to the FDA, antibiotic resistance is a very common problem facing both pharmacists, doctors, and their patients. “Get Smart About Antibiotics Week” helps to promote:

  • Pharmacist counseling.  Proper counseling of patients on the appropriate use of antibiotics can help patients and pharmacy customers understand the antibiotics they are given by their doctor and also give them a chance to ask any questions about their medications. Technicians can aid in this process by reminding the busy pharmacist to stop and counsel their patients about antibiotic use.

  • More counseling.  Pharmacists will also have the chance to counsel patients about antibiotic resistance and adverse effects from antibiotics. Like any medication, they too, have side-effects and sometimes adverse effects.

  • Recommend.  Pharmacists should also be reminded to recommend symptomatic therapy for viral illnesses.
