Changes Under Way for Johnson & Johnson Quality Control

In light of the series of recalls of many of its popular over-the-counter medications, Johnson & Johnson, parent company of McNeil Consumer Healthcare, told the Wall Street Journal last week that it is doing an overhaul of its quality control department.

Under Johnson & Johnson’s new remediation plan, the three main divisions of the company—drug, medical device and consumer health care—will be consolidated under one quality control department. Ajit Shetty has been appointed to oversee the department, and three chief quality officers will serve under Shetty to manage each division.

Throughout 2010, Johnson & Johnson has endured a series of recalls of several popular OTC medications. In January, McNeil put out a recall of adult Tylenol Arthritis and Motrin after it had received several complaints from customers of a moldy smell. Later in April, McNeil issued another massive recall of several children’s medications such as Benedryl, Motrin, Tylenol and Zyrtec when it was believed that some of the medications contained foreign particles or inactive ingredients that do not meet internal testing requirements. No injuries or deaths associated with the recalls have been reported.

The FDA launched an investigation into the recalls and traced them to quality issues at production plants in Fort Washington, Pa. and Las Piedra, Puerto Rico.  The plant in Fort Washington has been shut down, and mass production is not expected to begin until second half of 2011. However, according to an article Drug Topics online, McNeil has parlayed production of the recalled products across other sites and expects to have supply for those products by first quarter of 2011.

According to an the Wall Street Journal, McNeil has also advertised openings for at least 17 different jobs devoted to ensuring high quality standards in its medications. Neither McNeil nor its parent company Johnson & Johnson has commented on whether or not the jobs are related to the remediation plan.
