The CDC Says Prescription Drug Use in America Is Rising
The number of Americans taking at least one prescription drug is increasing, and spending for prescription drugs has more than doubled, according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the survey, done from 2007 to 2008, nine out of every ten American adults and one out of every five children were found to be taking at least one prescription drug, and the number of Americans who have taken at least one prescription drug over the past month increased to 48 percent from 44 percent in 1999. Spending for prescription drugs more than doubled to $283.1 billion.
Elderly Americans were the most likely to be using multiple medications. More than 76 percent of older Americans reported taking two or more medications. About 37 percent reported taking five or more medications. Also, Americans with health coverage were almost twice more likely to take a prescription medication. If those with coverage also had a prescription drug plan, they were 22 percent more likely to take prescription medications.
The survey also found that the most commonly used prescription drugs were asthma and allergy medications in small children, central nervous system stimulants for adolescents, antidepressants in adults aged 20 to 59, and cholesterol and hypertension medications for adults aged 60 and older.
The results of the survey were published in a brief by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics last week. Detailed results of the survey are available on the CDC web page at www.cdc.gov.
