Those With Medicare Saving Big on Prescriptions Due to the Affordable Care Act

Seniors and disabled individuals have saved $4.8 billion in prescription drug costs due to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) started by President Obama.  In addition to prescription drug savings, 20.7 million qualified patients received free preventative services in the first nine months of 2012.  Health and Human Services (HHS) estimates the Affordable Care Act can save individuals that have original Medicare $5,000 from 2010 to 2022.

The goal of the Affordable Care Act is to provide benefits so Medicare prescription drug coverage and preventative services will be available to those that need such care.  Pharmacy Technicians may remember that before 2011 those with Medicare had to pay partial costs for services that included preventative care.  Preventative care ranges from colorectal cancer screenings, prostate cancer screenings, and other tests like mammograms.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius recently commented on the big savings gained by patients who have benefited from the Affordable Care Act.  “I am pleased that the healthcare law is helping so many seniors save money on their prescription drug costs.  Medicare is stronger thanks to the healthcare law, offering benefits at no costs to seniors,” said Sebelius.

Pharmacy Technicians can learn a great deal about the Affordable Care Act and how it affects consumer care and prescriptions.  Do you agree that the healthcare law has helped those who benefit from it?
