Remembering American Diabetes Awareness Month

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), 26 million Americans are affected by some form of diabetes with another 79 million at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.  Geralyn Spollett, President of Healthcare and Education of the American Diabetes Association recently commented on American Diabetes Awareness Month.  “Every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes.  For too many, diabetes is thought of as a minor hindrance rather than a life-changing disease.  Our goal is to use American Diabetes Awareness Month to reveal what a day in the life of diabetes is really like” said Spollett.

Pharmacy Technicians can help answer questions concerning Diabetes Type 1 and Type 2 by informing and educating pharmacy customers about this serious, but controllable condition.  Here is a look at the two types of diabetes:

· Type 1 Diabetes.  When a patient is diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes it is found that their body does not produce enough insulin.

· Type 2 Diabetes.  Type 2 Diabetes is when the body does not make enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin.

There are ways individuals can prevent diabetes by eating a healthy diet, getting a good amount of exercise, staying active, and also making sure they seek early detection of their condition so proper treatment can begin.  To learn more about diabetes and American Diabetes Awareness Month go to www.diabetes.org
