Breast Cancer Diagnosis Sometimes Accompanied with Symptoms of Short-Term PTSD

According to a new study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute conducted by the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center found women are often diagnosed with PTSD in conjunction with a newly diagnosed case of breast cancer.  Patients with the double diagnosis are best treated early so the symptoms can be managed promptly.  The study found African American, Asian, and women under the age of 50 were more likely to have the double diagnosis.  Women in the study were diagnosed with stage I, II, or III breast cancer.

Here are some additional facts about the study:
  • 23 percent of women with newly diagnosed breast cancer reported symptoms consistent with PTSD.
  • Researchers of the study also believe that patients who have been diagnosed with other types of cancer may be diagnosed with PTSD as well.
Dr. Alfred I. Neugut, M.D., PhD, professor of medicine and epidemiology, at Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons, and lead author of the study recently commented on the study’s findings.  “This study is one of the first to evaluate the course of PTSD after a diagnosis of breast cancer,” said Dr. Neugut.
