Nexium 24-Hour Goes OTC

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Nexium (esomeprazole) 24-Hour (20 mg) as an OTC product. Nexium works as an acid blocker and gives relief to many patients that suffer from overproduction of acid in the stomach, leading to unpleasant conditions like heartburn and acid reflux disease.

Paul Struman, President of Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, recently commented on the approval. “Switching medicines, whenever appropriate from prescription to non-prescription status improves access, empowers consumers to care for their own health and is an important strategy for Pfizer. The FDA approval of Nexium 24-hour is a significant milestone in executing against our plan,” said Struman.

The most common side-effects associated with Nexium are headache, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Patients should also talk with their pharmacist in regards to other medications they may be taking as they can affect how Nexium works. With the new OTC approval of Nexium 24-hour, patients will be able to obtain the drug even if the pharmacy portion of the big-box retail stores are closed as it will be located with other medications of it’s kind over-the-counter.  Pharmacy technicians may refer questions about Nexium to their pharmacist and should be aware of the new OTC product that will be on pharmacy shelves.
