August Is National Immunization Awareness Month

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are reminding individuals that August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). Pharmacy technicians will begin to see an influx of patients and pharmacy customers soon as school children, teens, and college students come in to get their shots by qualifying pharmacists. The CDC is also encouraging healthcare workers to get vaccinated this year against:

  • Influenza.  Flu vaccines should be given every year. Pharmacists and technicians will want to protect themselves from the flu this season. It is important to know that you cannot get the flu from the flu vaccine, according to the CDC.

  • Hepatitis B vaccine. Acute Hepatitis B infections can lead to chronic infections.  Chronic infections can cause liver damage, liver cancer, or death. Because medical professionals are exposed to blood, body fluids, and used needles for procedures, the Hepatitis B vaccine can be a life saver.

  • Chickenpox vaccine. The chickenpox vaccine is often transmitted by hospital staff, patients, and hospital visitors. Those who are not immune to the disease should be vaccinated. Many times people contract chickenpox and may not even know they have it. College students should also get this vaccine to prevent the miserable virus that can leave lasting scars.

Other needed vaccines such as the measles/mumps/rubella (MMR), Tetanus/Diphtheria, and Pertussis shots are also essential vaccines for healthcare professionals.  Pharmacy technicians may be interested in checking out the “Toolkit to Help Raise Awareness about Immunization” located at www.nphic.org/niam for more information.
