NPTA Named One of The Top Ten Largest Trade Associations in Houston

The National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA) is honored to have been ranked the ninth largest trade association in Houston, according to the Houston Business Journal’s 2010 List of the Top 25 Largest Houston-Area Trade and Professional Organizations.

“We’ve come a long way from where we started,” exclaimed Mike Johnston, CPhT and Founder of NPTA. “It all started with just three pharmacy technicians, myself and a vision at a Holiday Inn Express in Northwest Houston one Saturday morning. More exciting, however, is the impact that this organization is having on the standards of practice and addressing preventable medication errors.”

NPTA was founded in Houston in February 1999. The organization has since grown into the world’s largest trade association for pharmacy technicians with thousands of members, both national and international, from a variety of pharmacy practice settings. Houston currently serves as headquarters for the NPTA corporate office and as the home of the training facility where NPTA hosts its sterile products (IV), chemotherapy and compounding certification courses.

In addition to assisting pharmacy technicians in advancing their professional careers, NPTA also engages in political advocacy and lobbying for pharmacy technician issues, such as technician registration, competency examination requirements, educational standards and training. NPTA’s large membership base has enabled the organization to help pass Emily’s Law, the landmark legislation in Ohio that ensured pharmacy technicians have the training and experience to properly and safely dispense sterile products medications to Ohio patients. NPTA is currently trying to pass a national version of Emily’s Law.
