FDA Approves HIV Prevention Drug Truvada
The Food and Drug Administration has approved the HIV prevention drug Truvada. Truvada is a combination pill used to prevent HIV and pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP). Truvada is the first drug of its kind and the hope is that it will prevent the endless cases of HIV and deaths due to HIV.
According to a press release by Gilead Sciences, 1.2 Americans are currently living with HIV and 50,000 new infections occur each year. “This approval is a major milestone in our 30-year-fight against AIDS,” said Robert M. Grant, MD, MPH, Betty Jean and Hiro Ogawa Endowed Investigator, Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology, University of California, San Francisco, and lead investigator of the iPrEx trial. “The use of PrEP alongside routine HIV testing gives us a tremendous opportunity to reduce the rate of new HIV infections in this country and around the world.”
Some view the approval of Truvada as a license to have unprotected sex, while others consider it a huge advancement in the war against HIV and AIDS. As pharmacy technicians you will probably hear mixed reviews of the drug approval. What do you think of the Truvada positive nod?
