Omega-3 Supplements Do Not Reduce The Chances of Cardiovascular Incidents

In the past, health professionals have always considered Omega-3 supplements an asset to good heart and brain health, but recent results prove otherwise.  Recent results published in the Journal of American Medical Association (September 12th, 2012) edition based on information from a meta-analysis of randomized trials suggest that taking Omega-3 supplements do not reduce the risk of cardiovascular events and outcomes.  Specifically, the meta-analysis study included 20 studies and over 68,000 patients where all-cause mortality, cardiac death, sudden death, heart attack, and stroke were considered.  The study lasted for a period of two years with the minimum duration of 1 year.  Patients who took part in the clinical trial were given an average dose of 1.51 grams of Omega-3 fatty acids per day in the trial.

According to a recent article published on PharmacyTimes.com, ‘Use of Omega-3 supplements to improve heart health has been supported by major societies’ guidelines, but the FDA has only approved their use to lower triglycerides in patients with hypertriglyceridemia.’  The authors of the study also do not justify the use of Omega-3 supplements as a useful intervention in common everyday use or clinical practice to benefit patients.
