Goals & Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Review the epidemic of substance abuse and prescription drug abuse in United States.
  • Identify the responsibility of pharmacy practitioners to determine the validity of controlled substance prescriptions.
  • Identify factors that pharmacy practitioners might consider in their assessment of a controlled substance prescription’s legitimacy.
  • Review the use of a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP).
  • Review the assessment of prescriptions for appropriate therapeutic value.
  • Determine if prescriptions are based on a legitimate medical purpose.
  • Review take control of controlled substances act (Chapter 2018-13, Laws of Florida)
  • Identify the federal guidelines that impact upon distribution of controlled substances.
  • Review the Florida's Laws and rules regarding prescribing & dispensing of controlled substances.
  • Discuss emergency treatment for suspected opioid overdose (Section 381.887, F.S.).
  • Review available treatment resources for opioid physical dependence, addiction, misuse, or abuse.
