Statement of Solidarity Amongst Recent Pharmacy Walkouts

10/10/2023

To the courageous pharmacists and pharmacy technicians of Walgreens and CVS who have chosen to stand up and walk out,

In this moment, as you take a stand against unsafe and unacceptable working conditions, we stand with you in unwavering solidarity. Your actions resonate deeply, especially when considering part of the sacred oath every pharmacist takes includes: "I will embrace and advocate changes that improve patient care." This oath is a testament to the commitment pharmacists have towards the health and well-being of their communities, emphasizing the profound role they play in safeguarding public health.

Your courage and resilience shine a light on a critical issue that extends far beyond the walls of individual stores — it touches upon the very fabric of community health and well-being. By championing the essence of your oath and demanding better working conditions, you are actively advocating for changes that safeguard patient care and uphold the integrity of your profession.

It is a grave concern that those on the frontlines of healthcare, the very individuals we trust to ensure our well-being, face challenges that prevent them from honoring their pledge fully. No pharmacy professional should be forced to compromise between personal well-being and the safety and health of their patients.

Your actions serve as a reminder that standing up for workplace rights is synonymous with standing up for patient rights.
The two are inextricably linked.

Know that your message is heard, your concerns are shared, and your bravery is acknowledged and celebrated by many. May your actions pave the way for necessary reforms and usher in an era where patient safety and worker well-being are held to the highest standard.

In solidarity,

Mike Johnston, CPhT-Adv
